Movie Description
“Singing Back the Buffalo” is an award-winning 2024 Canadian documentary directed by award-winning Cree filmmaker Tasha Hubbard (nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up). It tells the story of Indigenous visionaries, scientists, and communities working to rematriate the buffalo — bringing large herds back to the Great Plains after centuries of near-extinction.
The documentary follows the buffalo’s journey across the Northern Plains in 2022, meeting with leaders such as Blackfoot Elder Leroy Little Bear. The film blends personal narrative with scientific and cultural insights, showing how buffalo restoration is both a cultural renewal and an environmental necessity.
The film reflects on the historical near-extinction of buffalo — from over 50 million to fewer than 250 — and it's devastating impact on Indigenous communities
