BMO’s first day of business was November 3rd 1817 – so we are celebrating 208 years in North America this November! Our history in Chicago goes 143 years as Harris Bank was founded in 1882. Before Canada was even a country and until 1942, we were unofficially the “Bank of Canda” – printing bank notes and minting coins for Canadian currency! In 1984 BMO bought Chicago’s Harris Bank and now known solely as BMO, we are the 8th largest bank in North America with over 1,000 US branches in 32 states!
